Ghostly — Aspen Tree Grove After Fire

Ghostly — for some reason this view really touched me. I was driving Scenic Highway 12 in Utah. I had not expected all the snow but was loving it. I then found a stretch where there had been a fire several years ago. The aspen regrow faster than other trees and were already pretty good size trees. There was just one dead tree standing above the rest in this area and it was almost completely white – it felt like a ghost standing among the other live trees.

"Trees are as close to immortality as the rest of us ever come." ― Karen Joy Fowler

Did you know: Aspen can sprout from existing roots and these suckers grow faster than the new slowing growing conifers that might have been in the are so aspen can dominate in a grove for many years after a fire.
